New Castle County Courthouse

575,000 SF 900-car Capacity     Wilmington, Delaware

Located in the heart of downtown Wilmington, the 575,000 SF New Castle County Courthouse is a symbol of justice and sense of place for Delaware citizens. The building is sited in such a way as to be a referential landmark on the city skyline while providing a pedestrian friendly scale at street level. The low element of the building is three stories above ground with office space, holding, and family court courtrooms. The main tower orients the pedestrian as they arrive from the train station and downtown business district; and vehicular traffic as they arrive from Interstate 95. The new Courthouse utilizes state-of-the-art technology for data and video transmission and employs the latest developments in security for the protection of judicial employees, detainees and the public.

The need for 900 parking spaces is filled by the adjacent parking garage. The garage design is within the same vocabulary as the courthouse utilizing brick, precast concrete, metal panels and tinted glass. The eight-level, double-threaded helix design provides maximum efficiency on the narrow site.
