Howard High School Facility Assessment & Renovation

Wilmington, DE

Howard High School, recognized on the National Register of Historical Landmarks, was founded in 1867 and first occupied their original building on the current 12th  Street campus location in 1928.  A major expansion followed in 1974 and the facilities have undergone limited major renovation. NCCVTSD hired BSA+A as part of the Howard Planning Initiative Phase I to identify and establish a strategy for remediation of deficiencies in educational, vocational training and physical plant areas.  This was a result of the Phase II Initiative declaring further assessment and improvement of the physical plant was absolutely necessary.

The $36 million renovation will include upgrade to all areas of program and building systems. Highlights include improvements to the lobby with a forced, secure entrance for all traffic throughout the building.  The entire building campus will be enhanced with new a new courtyard and green space to create an inviting learning environment.  The exterior will feature new cladding to improve the aesthetic. Improvements for fire and life safety will take place throughout the building.  Overall security on the campus will be greatly enhanced for better safety and security for the students.  The complex renovation will be phased with a target completion of 2014.
