AIA Delaware Selects BSA+A for 2010 Design Awards

March 23, 2010

BSA+A was honored with two awards at the 2010 AIA Delaware Awards Program. The Memorial School Solar Courtyard was chosen as a Citation award winner in the unbuilt category and BSA+A was also presented with the Merit award for the Chester Wharf Annex in this category.

AIA Delaware’s 2010 AIA Design Awards recognized significant achievements by members in planning, design, and execution of architectural projects that exhibit exceptional design quality.

The Memorial School Solar Courtyard design includes 18 photo-voltaic solar trees which generate about 4.5kW and 5 SRECS each. This solar panel array will not only reduce the school’s electric bill and generate new revenue, but the panels themselves will provide a shade structure to the courtyard, making it an enjoyable and cool outdoor learning space and extension of the school building. The design impressed the AIA jury finding it to be “A sculptural yet very functional and sustainable design solution!”

The Chester Wharf Annex is a three-story rehabilitation of an existing turn of the century warehouse building. The design provides the addition of two additional floors to the single-story Annex. The combination of glass and metal was used in the design of the exterior façade to maximize day-lighting for internal spaces while creating an exciting composition. The AIA jury was impressed indicating the “exterior rendering of the building is very expressive and sets the mood of the design concept.” The interior design and proposed finishes are influenced by the soccer being played in the stadium adjacent to the Annex.

BSA+A, based in Wilmington, DE with offices in Red Bank, NJ and Baltimore, MD, is known for its award-winning designs for K-12 education, museums, and corporate offices.
